A reminder of how French law works

Adults and children over 10 years of age must wear seatbelts in the front and back seats of cars.

Children under 10 years of age must use appropriate approved seat restraints applicable to their size (or to the seatbelt). This has been in force since January 1st, 1992.

The law in force prohibiting a child from being transported in the front seat of a vehicle, does not apply if the child is seated with his/her «back to the road » in a child car seat specially designed and approved to that effect and where the front seat does not have an airbag.

SAFETY DEVICES:
The only devices which are approved are those which react by holding the child in place (the same principle as the seatbelt).

They protect the child by:

avoiding ejection (during a crash at 50 km/h, a child weighing 30 kg who is thrown forward, becomes a body mass of 500 kgs which, without a retaining system, is impossible to neutralise)

controlling body movement at the moment of impact

being placed on the strongest parts of the body. In summary, only approved car seats should ever be used for young children.
